Matthew D. Barnhart, DVM, MS, Diplomate, ACVS, is a Board-certified Veterinary Surgeon at MedVet Columbus where he has been a part of the team since 1999. He is also the Surgery Specialty Leader for all MedVet locations.

Dr. Matthew Barnhart attended The George Washington University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1991. Then he eared a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. Following his graduation from veterinary school, he completed a yearlong internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Oradell Animal Hospital. Then he completed a three-year residency in small animal surgery at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He also earned a Master of Science in Veterinary Clinical Sciences during his residency program.

Since becoming a Board-certified Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2000, Dr. Barnhart has become a leader in the veterinary surgery community. He is the author and co-author of several scientific papers widely published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association and Veterinary Surgery. He has also contributed to veterinary textbooks including The Small Animal Emergency Manual – The First 24 Hours. Additionally, he has served as principal investigator in several clinical trials, studying veterinary orthopedic implants and pain control in dogs.

Dr. Matthew Barnhart is also an active advocate of continued education for veterinary professionals and has lectured nationally and internationally. He speaks on veterinary orthopedic topics such as pathophysiology of cranial cruciate ligament rupture, fracture repair techniques, and management of osteoarthritis.

Although Dr. Barnhart maintains an interest in all aspects of small animal surgery, his practice is focused on orthopedics including cranial cruciate ligament repair, joint replacement, and arthroscopic surgery. Dr. Barnhart is a pioneer of veterinary orthopedics in Ohio. He was the first to perform such innovative procedures as tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO), tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA), sliding humeral osteotomy (SHO), and minimally invasive fracture and joint surgeries.
